Thyroid Description
The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck, just below the Adam’s apple. It plays a crucial role in the body’s endocrine system by producing hormones — mainly thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3)— which regulate metabolism, energy production, body temperature, heart rate, and growth.
When the thyroid is not functioning properly, it can lead to conditions such as:
Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid – slow metabolism, fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance).
Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid – fast metabolism, weight loss, palpitations, heat intolerance).
Goiter (enlargement of the thyroid gland).
Thyroid nodules or cancer** in rare cases.
Thyroid function tests (T3, T4, TSH) are commonly prescribed to check hormone balance and detect disorders early. Regular monitoring is important, especially for women, older adults, and people with a family history of thyroid disease.
